Motivational Interviewing

Motivational interviewing is a client-centered, therapist directed counseling style aimed at helping clients change their behavior by helping them explore and resolve ambivalence.

A therapy technique called OARS is used in this type of therapy to move the therapy process along. OARS stands for: (Open questions, affirmation, reflective listening, and summary reflections. These techniques and skills are used “early and often” in the motivational interviewing approach.

Motivational interviewing is often used to help clients manage health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, asthma and immune disorders. It is also used to address substance abuse. It helps clients become motivated to change the behaviors that are preventing them from making healthier choices.

If you are having difficulty getting motivated to change behaviors in your life that are causing you problems, or stuck in a negative situation in your life, motivational interviewing may help.
